Burleigh and Craven Dunnill Jackfield collaborate on an iconic new tile collection

Burleigh, the world’s sole maker of tissue transfer decorated ceramics, and Craven Dunnill Jackfield  have partnered to launch a range of tiles using patterns from the former’s design archive.

In an unprecedented collaboration between the two British heritage companies, Burleigh, the world’s sole maker of tissue transfer decorated ceramics, and Craven Dunnill Jackfield, the 150-year old bespoke tile producer, colour matching expert and restorer, have partnered to launch a range of tiles using patterns from the former’s archive, amassed over the 170 years of the pottery’s history.

The end product from Craven Dunnill Jackfield’s collaboration with Burleigh will comprise both cast and pressed tiles, and will bear Burleigh’s 1968 Calico pattern.  The translucent glaze pools around the three-dimensional relief pattern creating an exquisite stained glass appearance.  In practice, the glaze acts like a stained glass window, highlighting the detail in the floral designs.

The collaboration is truly a coming-together of two historic companies, holding paramount the use of traditional materials in the creation of handmade, British works of craft.  The retail price for patterned tiles starts at £8.95 per unit and are available in Laurel, Cobalt, Smoke, Aquamarine, Turquoise, Tangerine and Flame..

About Burleigh
Burleigh’s patterns are iconic its ware is stocked in Bloomingdales, Soho House, One Kings Lane, Harrods, Fortnum & Mason and Liberty, and it can be found in some of the world’s most prestigious hospitality venues including The Ned, Chiltern Firehouse and Bibendum.

Burleigh has also recently collaborated on a collection of pottery with Ralph Lauren. Its patterns are recognised all over the world.

Founded in 1851, Burleigh is the last pottery of its kind in many respects. It is the last pottery in the world to practice under-glaze tissue transfer printing, which is a Victorian method of ceramic decoration. Ink is applied to copper rollers, which is then used to apply the print to tissue paper (which is actually French cigarette paper). The inky paper is then applied to the ‘biscuit’ ceramicware by highly skilled tissue transfer decorators at Middleport Pottery, which is the factory out of which Burleigh has always operated.
