Home renovations saw an unprecedented boom in the UK during the past 2 years, with many investing their time in lockdown on home improvements – and it’s a trend that has continued right into 2022.
At the height of the pandemic in 2020, homeowners spend a staggering £55 billion on home renovations, with £39 billion being spent in 2021. With 51% of Brits planning to make home improvements in 2022, it looks like the trend will continue throughout the year.
But where will homeowners start? Which room is getting a little extra love in 2022?
According to new research from I Want Wallpaper, the most popular room homeowners are keen to renovate in 2022 is the kitchen.
Looking at Google Trend data, the wallpaper specialists looked at popular search term combinations such as ‘ideas’ ‘renovations’ design’ and ‘makeover’ for each room in 2022 then added them together to determine the most popular.
Kitchens came out in the top spot with 145,800 associated searches. The main bedroom is 2nd with 132,050, while Bathrooms came 3rd with 123,380.
The research also shows which room is the most popular renovation project in the UK by country. According to the findings, England and Wales are on it when it comes to home renovations in 2022 – both countries have nailed the top spot for renovation ideas for certain rooms.
Wales came on top in searches for renovation ideas for the kitchen, main bedroom, bathroom, garden and home office. England came out top in searches for renovation ideas for the spare bedrooms, loft conversions, extensions, basements/cellars, and the front garden. Interestingly, Scotland came out top for searches on garage renovations.
Reflecting on the results, Alex Whitecroft, Head of Design at I Want Wallpaper said:
“Home renovations have, understandably, been a huge focus for many homeowners in the last 2 years, and there’s no sign that it’ll slow down anytime soon. Search data is a great way to see what kind of ideas homeowners are looking for where they’re looking to invest their time in 2022.
It also helps us to see where these projects are likely to take place in the UK. It’s clear that homeowners in Wales are really investing in renovations, especially in the rooms that are most likely to add value to the home.
So much inspiration can be found online, and we can’t wait to see how these potential future projects unfold, especially when it comes to interior design and renovation.”
